PRESS RELEASE
aMaizin Partnership
8 March 2007
The Jersey Heritage Trust and aMaizin! Maze have formed a partnership for the 2007 season to celebrate the rich diversity of Jersey’s heritage.
The Maze at La Hougue Farm in St Peter will be formed in the shape of a map of the Island featuring ten historical sites including Mont Orgueil, Elizabeth and GrosnezCastles, La Hougue Bie, Hamptonne, CorbièreRadioTower and dolmens. The two attraction providers will also cross promote their sites by offering discounts or added value to encourage Island families and visitors to aMaizin! Maze and the six sites operated by the Heritage Trust.
The title of the Maze will be Time Trek and those who weave their way through the stalks of maize will become Time Travellers as they follow a heritage quest to reach the core. The smaller maze – which is designed for younger children and disabled access – will be themed around Jersey dolmens.
The Director of the Jersey Heritage Trust, Jon Carter, and Carlton and Kristina Le Feuvre of the family-run aMaizin! Maze are delighted to form a partnership which they hope will encourage Islanders and visitors to discover Jersey’s history through fun-filled family-based activities.
’Carlton and Kristina are doing a fantastic job in diversifying from agriculture and turning their family farm into a major attraction which this year will literally put our diverse offerings on the map. Working so closely with another attraction is a new experience for the Trust but can only be the way forward in what is difficult times for the Tourism industry. This is not working with the competition, this is an example of attractions working together to increase their share of the visitor and local market and to offer greater benefits to all,’ said Mr Carter.
Mrs Le Feuvre was equally enthusiastic about the joint venture. "Our staff are highly trained about Jersey’s attractions and we already promote a number of heritage sites to our visitors. Our AdventurePark is doubling in size this year and we are using the opportunity to make a number of activities that will promote Jersey Heritage, not just for 2007 but for a number of years ahead.
Mr Le Feuvre agreed. He said: "It is important for Jersey that we seek to maximise the possibilities for both Jersey Heritage and Tourism, we are delighted to be involved with such a dynamic team."
Adrian Fisher Mazes will design the Maze and it will open on 1 July. The designers have created more than 500 mazes in 27 countries since they created the world’s first cornfield maze in 1991.
This is not the first time that Jersey’s Amaizin! Maze has followed a heritage theme. In 2004 it was themed to celebrate the 800th anniversary of Jersey’s allegiance to the Crown and two years ago it resembled a classic image of Neptune to reflect the 200th anniversary of the great naval battle of Trafalgar.
Since the aMaizin Maze opened in 2001 it has become a leading family attraction in Jersey. In 2005 Mr and Mrs Le Feuvre’s hard work was rewarded when they won the Indigo Lighthouse Entrepreneur of the Year Enterprise award in recognition of their growth and popularity in an increasingly difficult market. With a huge growth in corporate and social events aMaizin! Maze has quickly become a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike.
As custodians of the Island’s heritage, the HeritageTrust cares for Mont Orgueil and Elizabeth Castle, the award-winning MaritimeMuseum and JerseyMuseum, La Hougue Bie and Hamptonne. These sites are open to the public on a year-round or seasonal basis. The Trust also administers the Jersey Archive and the properties in the States Forts and Towers project. The Heritage Trust was runner-up in the Jersey Ambassador category at this year’s Jersey Enterprise Awards.
